Power bank capacity explained: how much do you really need?
Power-bank capacity is usually stated for its internal cells, not as energy delivered at a phone’s charging voltage. Conversion and cable losses mean the useful output is lower, so capacity is best used to compare classes rather than promise exact recharges.
Estimate from your routine
List the devices and the fraction of a charge each needs between sockets. A small bank can cover an evening phone top-up; a larger one may serve a tablet or several people but adds noticeable mass.
Battery sizes in milliamp-hours are not directly comparable at different voltages. Watt-hours provide a better energy measure when it is supplied, though real delivered energy still depends on efficiency.
Power changes usefulness
Capacity says how long a bank can supply energy; output rating says how quickly and which devices it can charge. Both the bank and device must support a compatible charging method.
Multiple ports often share a total limit. Connecting a second device can reduce speed, so check the combined-output table rather than adding the printed maximum for each socket.
Travel and ownership
Airlines apply battery rules by configuration and watt-hours, and requirements can change. Check the carrier’s current instructions before travel rather than relying on a product listing.
Lithium batteries age. Store the bank away from heat, inspect it for swelling or damage and use a suitable charger and cable. A little spare capacity is useful, but carrying the largest bank is not automatically sensible.
Before you decide
- Estimate energy for actual devices
- Check watt-hours and combined output
- Confirm airline rules before each trip
- Include bank and cables in carried weight
Common questions
Why will a 10,000mAh bank not fully deliver 10,000mAh?
Its rating describes internal cells; voltage conversion, electronics, cable and charging losses reduce energy delivered to the device.
Can a power bank charge a laptop?
Some can, when capacity, USB Power Delivery profile, cable and laptop input requirements all align.
