Inkjet vs laser printers: choosing by what you print
Laser printers are often associated with office documents and inkjets with photos, but current ranges overlap. The better choice depends on what is printed, how often the device sits idle and what each complete page costs.
Documents and graphics
A mono laser is practical for frequent text because toner does not dry in nozzles. Colour laser output can be crisp and fast, though photo texture and borderless media support may be limited.
Inkjets can handle photographs and varied paper well when inks and media are suitable. Office inkjets may also produce quick documents, so judge the exact model rather than the mechanism stereotype.
Idle time and maintenance
Inkjet nozzles may run cleaning cycles, which use ink. Very occasional printing can therefore change the apparent economy of large tanks or cartridges.
Laser printers use drums, fusers and sometimes separate waste units. Toner shelf life is convenient, but eventual maintenance items belong in the ownership calculation.
Calculate the workflow
Use stated cartridge or bottle yields only as comparison estimates because coverage and cleaning affect real use. Include every colour, drum and maintenance item, not just the cheapest black refill.
Check automatic two-sided printing, scanning and the document feeder separately. A printer that duplexes output does not necessarily scan both sides of an original automatically.
Before you decide
- Estimate colour and mono pages separately
- Include every consumable and maintenance item
- Check duplex print and scan functions independently
- Measure paper and access clearance
Common questions
Is laser always cheaper per page?
No. Volume, colour coverage, consumable design and maintenance determine the result.
Do ink-tank printers avoid cartridges?
They use refillable reservoirs, but still consume ink and may have maintenance parts or cleaning requirements.
