How to check whether an appliance is suitable for a smart plug
A smart plug is a switch with a rated electrical limit. It does not make an unsuitable appliance safe, and remote power is useful only when the appliance can be left connected and restart predictably.
Read both sets of instructions
Check the smart plug rating and the appliance plate or manual. Heating elements, motors and compressors can draw differently from simple electronics, especially at start-up.
Do not use adaptors or extension arrangements to work around fit or rating limits. Keep ventilation clear and stop using any plug or socket that is damaged, loose, discoloured or unusually hot.
Test restart behaviour
After a power interruption, some appliances stay off, some resume and others enter an unsafe or unwanted state. Test under supervision before relying on a schedule.
Devices requiring a physical button press may not be controllable by cutting mains power. Computers and storage equipment may also need an orderly shutdown rather than abrupt disconnection.
Design safe automation
Use schedules for loads that are appropriate to operate unattended and build in a clear manual override. Avoid automations whose failure could leave heat, water or moving equipment unmanaged.
Secure the app account, apply updates and check support information. If cloud control disappears, the physical button should remain accessible rather than hidden behind furniture.
Before you decide
- Compare plug rating with appliance requirements
- Check start-up and restart behaviour under supervision
- Keep the socket visible and ventilated
- Review account security and manual override
Common questions
Can a smart plug control any appliance below its wattage limit?
No. Appliance type, start-up current, manufacturer instructions and safe unattended operation also matter.
Is it safe to put a smart plug on an extension lead?
Follow both manufacturers’ instructions and electrical safety guidance; avoid stacked adaptors and never exceed the extension or wall socket rating.
