How to choose and place a soundbar for your TV

A soundbar has to fit the room before its audio features matter. Measure the television stand, check the screen’s lower edge and decide where a subwoofer or rear speakers could actually go.

Fit around the television

A bar that blocks the bottom of the picture can also obstruct an infrared receiver or make a centre-mounted TV stand awkward. Record the clear height and the usable width between stand feet, then allow room for plugs and cable bends.

Wall mounting changes the calculation. Check the maker’s required clearance, bracket arrangement and whether upward-firing drivers would sit below a shelf that blocks their path.

Place bass deliberately

A separate subwoofer can produce stronger low bass, but it still needs power and floor space. Corners often make bass louder and less even; moving it a short distance can change the result more than an app setting.

Wireless describes the audio link, not freedom from mains power. Plan the socket and avoid sealing the unit inside furniture unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that placement.

Connect without surprises

For television sound, HDMI ARC or eARC often gives simpler control than an optical lead, but the capabilities of both devices matter. Confirm the exact TV socket, audio formats and control behaviour.

Leave access to a spare television input if the soundbar uses HDMI pass-through. Games consoles may need video features that a particular pass-through connection does not preserve.

Before you decide

  • Measure width, height and cable clearance
  • Locate power for every separate speaker
  • Confirm ARC or eARC on both products
  • Check whether the remote remains necessary

Common questions

Should a soundbar be as wide as the TV?

No. Width can help separation, but fit, driver layout and listening performance matter more than matching the television edges.

Can a soundbar sit inside a cabinet?

Only if its instructions allow it and no forward or upward driver, microphone or ventilation opening is obstructed.
