Check smart plug models and retailer offers
Make sure the smart plugs you have researched are the versions you are actually buying. Record the manufacturer code, configuration and included items before comparing retailer totals.
Start with your priorities
Choose the use closest to yours, then look for evidence that addresses it. A product can be strong overall while another suits your particular requirements better.
| Your priority | What to investigate | What to weigh up |
|---|---|---|
| Lighting schedules | Reliable timer, physical button and sensible placement | A plug adds bulk and may block adjacent sockets. |
| Energy awareness | Accurate monitoring, clear history and export options | A reading shows one appliance, not the whole household bill. |
| Away control | Secure account, manual fallback and appropriate appliance type | Remote switching is unsuitable for some appliances. |
Match the model and complete offer
Start with the full manufacturer product code, not just a family name or retailer headline. Check generation, regional edition and the configuration that affects your intended use.
Compare the included package line by line. A photograph may show optional equipment. Confirm accessories, cables, chargers, controllers, consumables or installation items that are relevant to this product.
Compare equivalent condition and service terms. Record whether the item is new, refurbished, open-box or used, and read the seller’s description, warranty and returns information.
Calculate the delivered total and any essential additional costs. Check stock and the final offer at the retailer before ordering; a catalogue listing or search link does not guarantee availability.
Checks specific to smart plugs
- Compare maximum plug load with the appliance rating and instructions.
- Check physical fit, ventilation and suitable indoor or outdoor rating.
- Decide whether the appliance is appropriate for unattended scheduling.
- Confirm local button, after-power-cut behaviour and app requirements.
- Read energy-monitoring units and cost assumptions before interpreting results.
- Check security updates, support end date and account removal process.
Keep a useful comparison record
Make one entry per exact model. Separate a confirmed specification from a reviewer’s finding and from anything you still need to check.
| Record | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Exact product | Manufacturer code, generation, edition and configuration. |
| Included items | The parts and accessories included in this specific retailer offer. |
| Total cost | Item price, delivery and any necessary extras or service fees. |
| Retailer terms | Condition, stock, warranty, returns and any installation arrangements. |
