Pick the speaker type
Portable speakers are self-powered and designed to move; powered stereo speakers include amplification; passive speakers need a separate amplifier. Establish which one you need before comparing sound claims, because connections and upgrade paths differ.
A single speaker can fill a room casually, while a properly spaced pair can create stereo placement. The latter needs a sensible listening position and room for stands or shelves, so measure before buying.
Connections change convenience
Bluetooth is convenient for a phone, but consider auxiliary, USB, HDMI, optical or network inputs where they matter. A television, turntable or computer may need a different connection or an additional preamp.
Wireless pairing names can conceal limits. Check simultaneous connections, app dependence, multiroom compatibility and whether a wired input remains usable when the network changes.

For outdoor use, read the precise ingress-protection claim and the manual limitations. Water resistance does not necessarily cover sand, saltwater, charging when wet or prolonged exposure.

Powered and networked products may receive updates; find out how they are installed and what happens if the app is withdrawn. For passive speakers, inspect terminals, grille attachment and replacement-driver support.
Do not rely on a claimed wattage alone. Independent reviews can explain distortion, control responsiveness and real usability at lower volume, where many people actually listen.
Stereo image and source matching
For a stereo pair, leave room for sensible separation and a listening triangle. A pair pushed together on a shelf will not create the same image as a pair on stands, whatever the driver size.
Check whether the source has a line output, phono preamp, television return connection or Bluetooth capability the speaker actually accepts. Powered speakers often simplify the system but may limit later component changes.
Protection rating and outdoor use
Read the precise ingress-protection rating and its test conditions. A water-resistance claim may not cover charging, immersion, saltwater, sand or leaving the product outside.
