Size, resolution and desk depth

Measure the desk and viewing distance, including space for the stand and a monitor arm. A larger screen can improve workspace, but may force head movement at a shallow desk. Match resolution to comfortable text size rather than chasing the highest figure.

Try the operating-system scaling you will use. Text, legacy applications and remote-desktop tools can behave differently across resolution and size combinations.

Panel behaviour in real use

Panel technology influences contrast, viewing angle and response, but individual implementation matters. Independent tests can show brightness consistency, reflection handling and response artefacts that are invisible in a shortlist.

For colour work, evaluate the intended workflow: colour space, calibration, ambient light and whether the application is colour-managed. A claim of coverage does not replace a stable, suitable setup.

Connections and computer compatibility

Check every monitor input and the outputs on the exact laptop or desktop. The same connector shape can carry different display capability, and docks or adapters can impose their own limits.

USB-C monitors may provide charging and a hub, but power delivery and display support must match the computer and cable. Confirm the supported resolution, refresh rate and charging wattage in the documentation.

Ergonomics and mounting

Height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustment can prevent a purchase from becoming a fixed bad posture. Check VESA mounting if you plan an arm, plus weight and clearance for ports.

Avoid placing a bright display directly opposite a window if possible. Position, ambient light and breaks influence comfort more reliably than a marketing label about eye care.

Gaming and long-term ownership

For games, match refresh rate and adaptive-sync support to the graphics hardware and cable path. Review input lag, response at different refresh rates and overdrive behaviour rather than relying on a maximum headline.

Check warranty terms for pixels, panel defects and power supply, along with firmware update method. A monitor is usually kept for years, so ports and ergonomic flexibility can outlast a small specification advantage.

Pixel density and scaling

Screen size and resolution set pixel density, which affects text size and sharpness at a fixed desk distance. Try the intended operating-system scaling: too much scaling reduces usable workspace, while too little can make text tiring to read.

Review subpixel layout and text clarity where office work is the priority. A monitor praised for games can still render small text less cleanly with a particular operating system.

USB-C dock power and bandwidth

A one-cable monitor may carry display data, USB peripherals and charging, but its power delivery and data bandwidth are specified limits. Confirm computer, monitor, dock mode and cable all support the desired resolution and peripherals together.

A high-resolution display plus webcam, Ethernet and storage can exceed a hub configuration or reduce refresh rate. Read the monitor manual for port-sharing behaviour before replacing a separate dock.
